Sodbury 800

2018 marks the 800th birthday of the awarding of a Market Charter by King Henry III to William Crassus (Lord of the Manor) to hold a market in Chipping Sodbury.  On that day Chipping Sodbury was born.  To celebrate the piece of history, it is planned to turn the town Medieval for the weekend of 11/12 August.

The Town Council is working with local organisations and people to develop an exciting range of events during the Summer of 2018 which will end with The Big Lunch on Sunday 12 August.  The Big Lunch Committee organises a fantastic family event – a time to set up gazebos and chairs in Broad Street and enjoy the free entertainment.

In June there will be a concert of Medieval music held in St John’s Church which is being arranged by the Chipping Sodbury Music Society alongside the Festival Committee.  More information will be included on this page as its becomes available.

The Schools’ have been given the opportunity to have re-enactors visit them and provide an exciting programme in relation to a topic of the schools’ choice.  There will be a falconry display which local nurseries will be invited to attend to ensure the youngest members of the community do not miss out.

There will be several talks and smaller events going on in the Summer but the main event will take place on The Ridings on 11th & 12th August when we hope to have a medieval encampment.  Whilst we don’t yet have a full list of what will be available within the camp there will be lots for people to see and join in with.  We hope to have several arena events including a Knights Tournament and Falconry Display.  There will be a Medieval Puppeteer, story tellers, shield makers, candle makers, coin strikers, blacksmiths and lots more to keep everyone entertained.  On the Sunday there will be a Parade from The Ridings to Broad Street when Sodbury Players will re-enact the handing over of the Market Charter and celebrations will continue with The Big Lunch.

We are still at the planning and fund raising stage.  If you would like to become involved with arrangements please contact us.

There will be more information on this page and our Facebook page as it becomes available.
